A tall, commanding goalkeeper, Shane was signed from Worcester City for £10,000 in the summer of 1999.

He began as a trainee with Bristol Rovers, signing a professional contract in 1995 and going on to make 10 Football League appearances for the Pirates before being released in the summer of 1998.

He then spent a season with Worcester City and impressed the watching Cheltenham Town coaches during an FA XI v Dr Martens League representative match in 1998.

He was understudy to the long-serving Steve Book from the moment he arrived at Whaddon Road until March 2003 when former manager Bobby Gould handed Shane his full Cheltenham League debut against Mansfield Town - nearly four years after he first signed for the club.

He went on to establish himself as the first choice between the posts for Cheltenham and as one of the top goalkeepers in the lower divisions of the Football League.

Winning numerous accolades at the end of the 2006/07 campaign Shane Higgs put in another tremendous season during 2007/08. On countless occasions his goalkeeping skills won the day for Cheltenham Town and reinforced the fact that he his one of the best keepers in the Football League.

Shane was voted Cheltenham Town Player's 'Player of the Season' in May 2008, adding this latest accolade to the other previous awards he has picked up whilst playing at Whaddon Road.

The Oxford-born goalkeeper's excellent form throughout the season proved to be a big factor in helping the Robins to retain League One status at the end of the campaign.

Ever present throughout the 07/08 term he saved his very best for the final day of the season. Producing a string of world class saves he denied Doncaster Rovers automatic promotion to the Championship, but most importantly ensured that the Robins remained in League One.
