Cheltenham Town maintained their remarkable unbeaten record at Hartlepool's Victoria Park with an impressive win this evening.
In five visits to this corner of the world Cheltenham have made the long journey home with three wins and a pair of draws under their belt.
Steven Gillespie's double, his seventh and eighth strikes of the campaign, handed Keith Downing's side their second win on the road this term and their third Coca-Cola League One success in a row.
The Robins played with plenty of attacking intent in the opening 45 minutes and created a host of chances, and should have carried a healthier advantage into the break.
Hartlepool responded after the interval and asked plenty of questions of the Robins' defence, but a classic counter-attacking goal eight minutes from time settled the result and on this evidence, Cheltenham have every reason to believe they can escape the drop.
Jerry Gill returned to the Cheltenham side at right-back and regained the captain's armband. That was the only change to the team that defeated AFC Bournemouth 1-0 at Whaddon Road last week with Ashley Vincent moving to the substitutes' bench.
The Robins started in confident mood and competed well in the opening exchanges and took their lead with the first real chance of the contest in the 11th minute.
Alex Russell exhanged passes with Steve Brooker before aiming a pass down the right towards Gillespie, who took a touch and nipped in front of centre half Ben Clark before making for goal.
The striker had plenty to do as he carried it into the penalty area but he defied the tight angle and applied a cool finish under the frame of goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett from eight yards.
The game exploded into life and a flurry of goalmouth action followed the Liverpudlian's seventh goal of the campaign, with the majority of the chances falling to Cheltenham.
Steve Brooker had the ball in the net four minutes after the goal after a fantastic run by Andy Lindegaard down the right. The midfielder turned defence into attack and was supported by the bustling front man but he strayed the line as the ball was squared and the effort was chalked off for offside.
Then Gillespie picked play up out on the left, cut inside and swung in an effort from the edge of the penalty area that dropped the wrong side of the right post.
Shane Higgs was called into action for the first time a moment later when he denied James Brown from 16 yards with a fine block, but the Robins were putting the home side under considerable pressure and went on to strike the woodwork in the 20th minute.
Brooker nodded down Jerry Gill's long ball forward to Russell and the midfielder smacked the upright with a firm strike from 20 yards.
Hartlepool were struggling to contain a rampant Cheltenham side, who went close again two minutes later after a delicious ball by David Bird that picked out Michael D'Agostino on the right. The Canadian, who was cautioned for a clumsy foul shortly afterwards, controlled it and threaded a great ball between the centre halves but Brooker, from a promising position, blasted it into the side netting from the angle.
Even a lengthy delay as one of the referee's assistants was replaced through injury could not break the momentum, and only a goal line clearance by Michael Nelson prevented Gillespie heading home Russell's inswinging free-kick from the left.
The last chance of the half fell to David Bird, when his industry resulted in a 20-yard strike but the well-struck effort flew a foot wide.
Hartlepool striker Richard Barker had a pair of good opportunities after the interval, first heading Eddie Nolan's delivery from the right a foot wide then spinning and thumping one just wide on the turn after persistent work by Ben Clark 20 yards from goal.
Both of Cheltenham's veteran full backs were at the centre of play around the hour mark as Hartlepool enjoyed their best spell of the game.
Barker took adavantage of some hesitancy by Andy Gallinagh on the corner of the penalty area to pinch possession and make for the byline before cutting it back for Brown.
His strike seemed destined to find the back of the net but Alan Wright threw himself into the flight of the strike and blocked the danger.
Then, a minute later, a menacing centre from Nolan was flicked on and Jerry Gill, in an attempt to clear his lines, clipped the crossbar with his defensive header.
Next, Higgs was alive to Ritchie Humphreys' left footer, which picked up a deflection on its way through the conjested box, but the number one was sharply down to push it around his near post.
The game was finely balanced with a quarter of an hour to play. Robins' boss Keith Downing had sent on replacement wide men Scott Brown (for Lindegaard) and Ashley Vincent (D'Agostino), and while his side looked capable of registering a second, Hartlepool were cranking up the pressure and  Barker glanced another chance, this time a header, across Higgs' goalmouth.
And when the goalkeeper got down to parry substitute Joel Porter's angled drive, it looked as if it would be a torrid finale but the contest was effectively over when a terrific counter-attack resulted in a second goal.
It started after a superb challenge by Gill at right back. The 37-year-old reclaimed possession and sent the ball down the line to Paul Connor, a replacement for Brooker. Alex Russell joined up with play and received the ball off the striker and sent it on to Gillespie on the left hand side of the box,  who bent a first time effort into the top hand corner to seal the win.
